House Democrats Propose Taxing Insurance Companies to Pay for Reform

House Democrats have nearly completed drafting a health reform bill that consolidates versions created by three committees, Bloomberg reports. One detail remains undecided, however: How, exactly, Democrats will pay for the overhaul. "The lawmakers yesterday scaled back a proposed surtax on the wealthiest Americans, said Representative Sander Levin, a Michigan Democrat. At the same time, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she’s considering a levy on health insurers’ profits."

Democrats Renew Demand for Public Option

Democrats are renewing their calls for a strong government-run public option in their respective chambers.

Roll Call reports that 30 Senate Democrats signed a letter to Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and took to the Senate floor Thursday to renew their calls for a public option to be included in a melded health care reform bill that senators will soon consider. Reid is blending the more conservative Senate Finance Committee bill without a government-run public option with a more liberal version of the bill from the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Health Bill Vote Pushed Back by Senate Finance Committee

Roll Call reports that the Senate Finance Committee is pushing back its health bill vote until Wednesday at the earliest as lawmakers wait for the Congressional Budget Office to finish scoring the measure. It's unclear how the delay might affect Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's desire to move the bill to the Senate floor early next week. "Reid has indicated he would like to have his own CBO score of the merged product before bringing that measure to the floor" (Pierce, 10/5).
